Morning Hobby Cringe

If you have X, go check this out. The comments in this post are wild.

Lets start with the obvious...

-Incorrect location for one of their retail partners, check.

-Incorrect place where the kid is from, check.

-Wrong X handle for the shop in the post, check.

-Avoiding, upsetting the algorithm by correcting the link...in a separate reply, check.

-Jubilant [read sarcastically] excitement from a kid pulling probably the top card in a product, check.

-A sticker on a 1/1, check.

-A basketball player in a baseball product, check.

-Clear QC issues on a "pack fresh card", check.

Congratulations to Alex! But posts like this make it really hard to not be the "yeah but" person. There is way too much dumping on posts where people show their hits or the cards they feel are really cool and want to share and I don't want to do that. When we are inundated daily with the same old breakers and shops pulling the same old super, mojo, fire, Tesla equivalent hits, it's refreshing to see a kid pull a potentially valuable card from a product. I'm happy for the kid who is clearly FROM Indiana that pulled a card from a product in a shop that is clearly IN Georgia.

This is not MY social media account. This is not some regular "Joe Collector" account that paid for a checkmark for clout. This is a corporate account of arguably the biggest player in the hobby. Even a lowly guppy like me trying to swim through this giant sea of sharks, can identify when I screw up a post, then delete it, fix it, and repost it. So how does something like this get through? Don't they have things like spell check or understand basic grammar rules (which I get it, it's social media so no one does)? Don't they have oversight, editors, checks and balances? I know paid accounts have to have the ability to edit an X post, don't they? Apparently accuracy isn't as important as risking wrecking the algorithm of the app.

I'm certainly happy when I see manufacturers or LCS's post photos and video of their customers with product. I enjoy seeing the enthusiasm on people's faces when they get something that blows their mind. But the "pull of his life"?  For a pull of his life, the enthusiasm sure seems to be lacking here. However, I will give that a pass considering this is a teenage boy, and coming from a dad with three teenage boys at one point or another, I get this might be all the excitement that can be drawn out of young Alex. Especially for a picture that was clearly staged after buying the product, leaving the store, pulling the card, coming back to the store, putting it in a mag holder, and taking the picture...if you believe the story Topps eloquently laid out.

I'm not even going to address the fact this looks like a sticker auto on a 1/1 card. Or that it looks like there are potentially some dinged up corners and edges on a card "fresh" out of a pack. This is par for the course with modern products and happens all the time. Quality control seems to be a large area of contention and I'm still on the fence whether it's actually worse than ever or it's just that social media exacerbates it. There's also the question of quantity. If there is 10Xs the product quantity produced now, it would only make sense that there is also 10Xs the issues, right?

But my point of today's Morning Cringe is that it's unfortunate it took Alex for me to point out an example of another in a long line of silly Topps posts. There really should be more thought and care put into their interactions. This happens all too often with this company's social media account, where they post content that either isn't their own or give incorrect information, don't credit sources, and avoid any accountability for any of it. If Fanatics is putting strict guidelines & restrictions on sellers to even carry their product, holding dealers to a higher standard of operation, shouldn't the sellers/buyers also hold them to a higher standard of accuracy in their reporting, releasing information, and supporting their partners? We should.

But we don't. Fanatics/Topps is big enough, strong enough, and frankly, intimidating enough that they can survive off their seemingly pompous "do as we say or else" attitude behind the scenes and get away with operating in front of the curtain like an amateur clown show. I understand that many who work for these hobby-based corporations are collectors, are fans of the games, and participate in the hobby like the rest of us. They do as they are told and work their jobs like the rest of us. But the companies themselves are not collectors, fans, or participants. They are businesses. They don't care about you, only your money.

Complacency is acceptable as long as consumers keep buying. Always has been, always will be.

3 Trade Pickups

I just received the first trade package of 2010 today after trading with my new friend Chris from Michigan. Somehow in by freak accident, Chris stumbled onto my website and offered up some sacrificial cards for trade. Since Chris collects Detroit teams, I was more than happy to unload some Lidstroms and an Yzerman for a few Steelers that I needed.

Nothing fancy. Just three for the PC.

2006 Topps Gold Parallel Hines Ward (#302/2006)

This is one of my favorite HW cards because it really captures the game. The snow falling and the muddied up pants remind me of what Steeler football is all about. Now I have the Gold version. Too bad it wasn't #86.

2008 SP Rookie Edition Rashard Mendenhall

I am still not 100% sold on Mendy. He has had too many instances of putting the ball on the ground. With Parker likely out before training camp, he is most likely going to become the featured back.

2006 Topps True Champions Terry Bradshaw

These cards were only found in Wal-Mart boxes of 2006 Topps Football. How can you go wrong with a Terry Bradshaw card, though? In my opinion, you can't. 4-Time Super Bowl Champ. You can't argue with that.

Thanks Chris, and your package is on it's way.

(Oh and let's not forget a warm DFG welcome to Captain Canuck, aka Brian from Waxaholic. The Captain has the fortunate (or unfortunate) task of being my 10th follower. Sorry, there is no prize. And if there were, you'd probably want to give it back.)

Topps finally steps up to scammers...sort of

Yesterday, in an attempt to stop the epidemic of fake Rookie Premiere Autographs, Topps announced a change to their handling of authentication. Apparently, going forward, all certified autos will be sequentially numbered in foil.

This is finally great news for the hobby. At least going forward. However, nothing was mentioned to the fact that there was a Katrina scale flooding of the market already with fake autos. If we are ever going to remedy the problem, Topps and other card companies will need to adress this issue.

You can read the press release here.

Box Break - MJ Holding Co. Memorabilia Box (Football)

I have bought a few of these over the past couple years in both Hockey and Football and overall, I have been pretty satisfied. If you don't know, some retailers carry a box that claims 16 packs and 2 memorabilia cards inside for under $20. Many of these have yeilded me more than two jersey cards. In fact, a hockey box I purchased from Meijer a few months back had the two promised jersey cards (they are packed seperately, and 2 packs had other jersey cards and one had an auto.

I decided to pick another one up today, only this time it was a football box.

The box contained the following packs:

1 '08 Donruss Threads
1 '08 Press Pass
3 '06 Aspire
2 '07 Topps
1 '08 Playoff Absolute Memorobilia
1 '08 Stadium Club
2 '06 Topps
1 '06 Sage Hit
1 '06 Upper Deck
1 '05 Playoff Honors
1 '07 Upper Deck

There was also a huge pack inside that I had never seen before. It was a TriStar Hidden Treasures foil pack that said it contained 1 BCCG graded 9 or higher football card. Of course, this got me thinking what kind of awesomness could be nestled inside this pack. The labeling had all sorts of wonderful cards from the 40's and 50's. It also had illustrations of memorabilia pieces and autographs of some of the greatest players to ever put on a football helmet. It also was to contain a $10 coupon for grading, which basically equates to 1 free grade. This was going to be good!!

The tension was too much, I couldn't wait. I ripped open this one first. I saw the oversized plastic slab as I tore into the mylar foil. As I pulled it from the pack my anticipation level was at a fevered pitch and then....

Drew Bledsoe 1995 Fleer Pro-Vision graded 10? What the...? Was this it? A .25 cent card? Who grades a $.25 card? This has to be a mistake. Yeah, that's it. A mistake. Where is the note in here telling me I won something bigger?...

No note...

No grading coupon for that matter...

I think a little bit of me died today. Hopefully I will do better with the five other boxes I bought. God, I have a problem.

More on the Topps fall out

I am not a baseball card collector any longer and haven't been actively collecting since around 1996. However, I have kept up with baseball cards and what was being produced since then and have a pretty good working knowledge of the hobby. That being said, I am sad to see the MLB rights going to a single company for production of their products.

Being a hockey collector, this has been an issue for a few years now with Upper Decks exclusitivity rights with the NHL and NHLPA. With the vast selection of product every year in hockey, you don't have to look far to notice that the UD hologram logo is stamped on all of them. Same goes for basketball now, with Panini inking their respective name on all NBA products.

This creates two problems in my mind:

1. The product becomes bland and stale. Like many of my fellow bloggers, I enjoy a unique card design, something with flair, something different, something that makes me want to own everything in that product. UD had a few moments here and there but overall, has created a hockey product devoid of anything unique and full of staying power. With Topps already being inferior in terms of design and product layout, I only see misery for collectors in the baseball realm for the future.

2. There is no competition, therefore, no reason to live up to expectations. Without another player in the market, Topps will have carte blanche on how to produce the cards. Eisner has even said he is trying to get the kids back in the hobby, which I am all for, but at what cost? Sacrificing quality for marketability is counterproductive.

I am sure everyone has an opinion on this. A few of my fellow bloggers takes on the situation can be found below. Check them out and voice your opinions.
