Hockey History As Told By Cardboard - Ron Hextall

Wayne Gretzky once referred to Hextall as "the best goaltender I've ever played against". On December 8, 1987, he made history by becoming the first goaltender in the NHL (since those stats were kept) to net a goal on a shot.

The Flyers were leading at home at the Philadelphia Spectrum late in a regular season game against the Boston Bruins. Goalie Rejean Lemelin was pulled from the net for Boston to get the extra attacker.  As the puck caromed to the left side of the net, Hextall came out to play it, grabbing the loose puck and firing it down the ice into the empty net at the other end.

To cement his legend as the most prolific goal scoring goalie, he did the same thing again April 11, 1989 in a playoff game against the Washington Capitals.
